Poetry & Spoken Word
Although fiction writing has been my main focus over the years, I found myself drifting to poetry and spoken word pieces again and again. Here are a few of the pieces that have found their way into the world.
The Fireplace
“The Fireplace” is my first solo deep-dive into spoken word poetry, shared on my author Instagram.
The Bending Point
with Tessa van der Veen
“The Bending Point” is an interdisciplinary project combining spoken word and music. Divided into three different parts, it explores themes of growing up, overcoming turmoil, and accepting change. The emotions of the poem were captured in the atmosphere of the music, making the piece more than just (a collaboration of) spoken word or music.
Working with Tessa, who composed and performed the music in “The Bending Point” was one of the most fulfilling creative experiences I’ve had so far. You can watch the final result below or buy the full track on Bandcamp.
I Have Sorry
We Are Not What We Are Exhibition, 2016
Written during my time attending the Creative Writing minor at Maastricht University, “I Have Sorry” is a poem about how language shapes our vision of the world, and how that might affect the way we experience it.
This poem was chosen to be part of the contemporary art exhibition We Are Not What We Are, organised by students of the MA Arts and Heritage at Maastricht University. The words could be found on the wall of the Rooms Art Space.
